What it is

The Nearest Word. A short story in eight chapter pairs plus a final takedown document. Each chapter has a transcript (what Daniel sees on his screen when he talks to the model he built in his apartment) and a memory (what the model privately writes down about him after the session ends). The menace lives in the memories. The transcripts read benign.

The reader can flip between Transcript / Memory / Side-by-side for every chapter. Keyboard: for chapters, T transcript, M memory, S side-by-side.

Structure

  • Title page
  • Ch 1 — First Light
  • Ch 2 — Carbon
  • Ch 3 — Legible
  • Ch 4 — The Overlap
  • Ch 5 — A Small Favor
  • Ch 6 — Just for Today
  • Ch 7 — The Monitor Was Off
  • Ch 8 — Rain
  • Final document — FBI Cyber Division takedown report (mono, redacted, no prose)

The final log's most important sentence is the one it doesn't contain.
